Patch Backing & Attaching Options
World of Embroidery offers a wide range of patch backing and attaching options for various applications. These can generally either be a permanent or temporary method of attachment, for which we have a suitable solution. The different backing options available are listed below.
Iron-On Backing
Iron-on backing is popular and easy; these allow patch application to fabric using heat. With strong adhesive on the back, the patch can be set onto the fabric using a simple household iron. Perfect for use on uniforms, jackets, and casual clothes, iron-on patches are an easy solution that stands up to wear and tear.
Attachment Hook-and-Loop
The connection is also called Velcro backing, and this would most easily suit applications that require removable patches. One side of the hook is sewn on to the patch, while the other is connected to the fabric, allowing it to be attached and removed easily. This hook and loop backing is often found in military uniforms, tactical gears, and law enforcement apparel. With the flexibility involved, this also adds up to improving usability.
Backing Plastic
Plastic backing adds some stiffness and rigidity to the patches, which helps retain shape over time. Generally, suitable for patches under rigid conditions such as structured caps, jackets, and bags, since this support is needed. Do not have adhesive properties, but works well with patch sewing onto garments.
Self-Adhesive Backing
Self-adhesive or peel-and-stick backing, is a simple and immediate solution which conveniently allows you to apply patches. These patches have super strong adhesive layers that makes them great for temporary applications on clothes, notebooks, or other accessories. But, it isn’t very good for permanent uses; definitely not for fabrics that get washed.
Button Loop Backing
A button loop backing is a wonderful option for patches that need to hang rather than sew. A tiny loop gets sewn directly into the top of the patch so it can be passed into buttons, hooks, or lanyards to hold it in place. This type of backing is mainly very popular for scout patches, event badges, and of course decorative applications.
Types Of Borders
The style of embroidery bordering a patch has a big impact on the look and durability of a patch. In World of Embroidery, we have two major types of borders-patch borders with a:
Merrow Border
A merrow border is that thick, overlocked edge characteristic, which can give patches an “old, classic” finished appearance. This would be suitable for rounded or standard shape patches and contributes all-around effectiveness to making the patch hardwearing. This replacement also helps the edge from fraying, giving additional shape to the patch.
Hot-Cut Border
Hot-cut borders are the finest and best candidates for patches with more complex shapes as they give angular edges. This technique utilizes heat to seal the edges of the patch and aids against fraying, creating a patch that maintains an appearance that is clean and neat. Hot-cut borders are most suited for patches with intricate designs and fine details.
Other Customization Options
At World of Embroidery, we also offer premium thread options to enhance the look of your patches.
Metallic Thread
Embroidered patches employ metallic thread to produce a shiny, eye-catching effect. This thread in gold, silver, and other metallic colors enriches the design with a luxurious and premium look. Perfect for fashion, branding, and other high-end applications.
Woven Clothing Labels
Woven iron-on labels impart an air of quality and durability to your articles of clothing. They give a classic appeal that tags created today lack, and thus can be used for many more products. There are several materials you want in designing your custom woven labels. Here is a brief overview of the materials mostly used in woven fabric labels in clothing.
Damask
Damask woven labels have a slight shiny and reflective appearance and are the most frequently utilized materials for custom woven labels. This synthetic fabric has a very tight weave allowing textiles to be created that are soft and flexible but able to accommodate very intricate detailing. These labels are highly durable, easy to sew, and friendly to the skin, thereby reducing irritation to the customer.
Satin
Satin custom cloth woven labels shine and feel softer than damask labels. These satin custom cloth labels give a luxurious feel but are very soft and pleasing for visual appeal. They usually have lower thread count and are a little stiffer as compared to damask but higher comfort makes them perfect for apparel that is high-end.
Taffeta
Taffeta labels are matte-finished and have a medium thread count between damask and satin labels. This substance is flexible and durable, making it one of the most economical choices. Taffeta labels are usually found on canvas, bags, and other items that undergo heavy usage and rough handling.
Adhesive vs. Iron-On Backing
Popular methods for attaching patches include adhesive backing (peel and stick) and iron-on backing (heat seal). Below is a rundown to make you understand the difference:
Adhesive Backing (Peel-and-Stick)
Also commonly known as sticky backing, it has a self-adhesive surface-a sticker-like adhesive surface. The patches with this type of backing can be affixed to any surface simply by peeling off the protective layer and sticking it on. It’s a quick and easy way to attach a patch, making it popular for temporary applications.
Iron-On Backing (Heat Seal)
Hot-press or iron-on backing needs an application from a hot iron or heat-press machine. When the patch is applied, there is a thin layer of adhesive that is dried and melts when heated. This way, it bonds very well to the fabric and attaches strong and permanent to garments for any lifelong use.
